Vicky’s Delicious April Burgundy Selection – Part I

Burgundy wines have entered the legend for all and always have been an unreachable dream for me. If it was so, then the month of April has very well started for Vicky Wine.

It is a common thing in chauvinist countries to drink your own wine. In France for instance we drink French wines, in Spain, Spanish… This is also true in all major wine regions – In Bordeaux they drink Bordeaux, in Beaujolais I drink Beaujolais and so in Fleurie I always had Fleurie in my glass with eventually a few drops of Moulin-a-Vent.

As some like to say, nothing ever changes without a dream, so started Miss Vicky Wine. Well decided to try all the wines possible, I had chosen Burgundy for a good month of April. Here they were! Not one but 10, not alone but with their best mates, the wine makers.

First at beautiful cave Elzevir in Paris, today in Lyon, in a fun cafe theatre that is the Complexe du Rire

So what do you drink when you want Burgundy? I’ve decided to get spoilt- north and south, red and white, still and sparkling, dry and sweet. The forever Chardonnay and Pinot Noir but also the less known Gamay and Aligote.

Hardest choice for the Vicky Wine Tasters: what to try when you can only pick three glasses?

Hopefully this should help:

DOMAINES DEVILLARD
Domaine des Perdrix, Domaine de la Ferte and Domaine de Chamirey are the three domaines that belong to the Devillard Family. Elegance, Distinction and Prestige are the master word and their wines are reknown for being great Grands Bourgogne, amongst the best in the region: the Devillard were certainly born for Pinot Noir. Settled in nuit Saint Georges, le domaine des Perdrix is a king in the appelation.

For our happiness, Julien Ferran Devillard in person came with a few bottles of paradise..
Nuit Saint Georges aux Perdrix 2007 : this Nuit Saint Georges is perfect on a wine tasting, a light balance of fruit and spice with the delicacy of a the pinot noir. This wine also has firm tannin that gives it character.

Nuit Saint Georges 1er Cru “aux Perdrix 2007″ : Refined, Silky on the palate with a light proportion of spices and fruit, this Nuit Saint Georges is delicate and sophisticate and had the recognition of all. You can’t be wrong drinking it.

The Devillard family also has a negoce with grapes from Cotes de Beaune and Cotes Chalonnaise and does a Burgundy Grand Ordinaire with a less ordinaire name: LE RENARD.

Le Renard 2008 – A regular Burgundy takes another dimension when it is made by a Devillard. Fresh, with red summer berries it still has the silky touch of a good pinot noir and a hint of spices. A happpy pinot noir, to drink with no arrogance, by itself or with a summer dish.

DUFOULEUR FRERES
Pernand Vergelesses, Les Belles-Filles… what a beautiful name for a wine! When you don’t know a domaine, either you ask those who know and also know you, or you check out the name you like best, or you do the two. I just had heard of the Beautiful village of Pernand-Vergelesses in Cote de Beaune and found Les Belles-Filles a very appealing name. Fabrice Vinsurvin had just talk about the wine and I thought it was worse trying.

Thereafter, I found at about the Dufouleur Frères, two cousins that are the 12th generation of wine makers in their family. Young and passionate, they decided to keep up with the tradition of the family businness. As I already had the Bret Brothers on, I thought a bit more boys on the tasting wouldn’t harm. And I was not desappointed:

The Pernand Vergelesses, Les Belles-Filles 2007 was the richest of all red Burgundy this night. Incredibly spicy and fruity, this is an explosion of aromas on the palate…something a deep color and an aromatic noses already suggested. The Pernand Vergelesses is to drink slowly, to enjoy the long lasting finished… and could be eaten on any meat.

We also had a great selection from the domaine de Suremain, the domaine Gouffier (Aligote and Cremant de Bourgogne) and the Bret Brothers (Pouilly Vinzelles, X-Mas et In X-Tremis) but there will be another time to talk about it. Let’s first have more sips of their wines tonight!
