Vicky's adventures

Vicky crosses the channel for Languedoc Wines

Why would I write in English if it was not to bring the Vicky spirit across the channel…Or the ocean?

London ate my young heart and still drinks my Beaujolais wine.

This time though Languedoc region came first. The Vicky Languedoc Tasting was announced at the beautiful Maison du Languedoc in Cavendish Square. We felt lucky to be at the London Languedoc Heart beautiful setting!

Organised with the London School of Economics (LSE) French society, it brought along many French and French lovers missing their dose of quality wines and saucisson: a basic mishmash in France that seems to be a luxury one in England.

Languedoc is one of the largest wine region in the world. Mainly red wines are produced, a good share is “vin de table” but most of it is “vin de pays”. They are perfect as every day wines  and are able to compete with wines from the Rhône and the Bordeaux Region.

But where do you find breakthrough Languedoc wines in London for a perfect tasting? Borough Wines is the cutest wine shop in the famous gourmet and trendy market in London Bridge. There is Muriel, a Frenchy that has character and chooses her wine in consequence. She is a Languedoc fan and features Château Grézan. Their wines meet quality and personality, they are good money for value and diverse enough to match each occasion.

Vicky’s Château Grezan selection
  • A 110ha vineyard, mainly in Faugère made by Remi Fardel (Fourth generation of winegrowers in the château). Remi thrives on quality and environmental respect.

Chardonnay 2008: A golden robe. Buttered toast dominates first to give way to a mouthful of pears syrop and dried bananas. Alive and bold!

Pinot Noir 2008: a grape variety atypical for Languedoc… but one of my favorite! This wine has a flamboyant colour with a lively raspberry nose. Easy drinking with a pleasant after taste of mature fruits.

AOC Faugère, Expression 2007: (Syrah, Grenache, Mourvedre) Untamed with aroma of red fruits. A delicate, smooth taste and a good balance.

But also – Domaine des Lauriers, Picpoul de Pinet Classic 2008: A bright color with greens, it is fresh and agreeable: A symphony of aromas on your palate with some exotic fruits and a slice of peach.
